New York Lake Erie charter captains

Last verified

New York doesn't require a DEC guide license for people operating or assisting on a passenger-carrying vessel for hire licensed by the Coast Guard (or New York State) on the Great Lakes and the navigable parts of their tributaries (ECL §11-0533). Guiding off such a boat, for example wading a tributary, is outside that exemption.

New York publishes no charter list we can check, so cards here show "USCG credential: self-reported". Ask to see the captain's credential.

A New York fishing license doesn't cover the Pennsylvania or Ontario part of Lake Erie. Which license?
