Short answer Ask how the guide decides whether ice is safe to go out on, what safety gear every client carries, how you'll travel on the ice, and what happens if they call the trip off. We publish no ice conditions or reports. No ice is guaranteed safe.

Do you publish ice conditions?

No. We don't publish ice reports, forecasts or thickness. Get conditions from your guide on the day, and follow their call.

What does Ohio require of an ice guide?

An Ohio guide license is required to guide in the Lake Erie fishing district, on the ice as on open water. For an ice-only guide license, ODNR doesn't ask for boat or Coast Guard information unless the guide uses an airboat to carry people to or from the ice shanties; then a Coast Guard license is required. Ohio's public list marks guide types; entries with ice guiding show an "Ice" chip in the Ohio A–Z.

What should I ask about safety?

What should I bring?

Warm layers, waterproof boots and outerwear, extra gloves and socks, food and hot drinks, and your fishing license. Ask what the guide supplies.

Why "no ice is guaranteed safe"?

Because no one can promise it. Follow your guide's go/no-go decision, and don't go out on your own because others are out.
