Charter captains by state

Last verified

Each state handles fishing guides and charter boats differently. Here is what each one publishes, and how it shows up on a captain's card.

Ohio

Ohio licenses Lake Erie fishing guides and publishes a list of the guides who chose to be listed. We show every entry on that list, A–Z, with the date of the list. Ohio's list includes only guides who opted in on their application, so a guide who isn't on it may still be licensed.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania requires a PFBC permit for charter boat operators and fishing guides on its waters, including Lake Erie. When a Pennsylvania captain lists here, we check PFBC's permitted charter/guide report and show a badge if the business and the payer's name match. We don't republish PFBC's report.

New York

New York doesn't require a separate DEC guide license for people running or crewing a Coast Guard-licensed charter boat on the Great Lakes. New York publishes no charter list we can check, so New York cards say "USCG credential: self-reported".

Michigan

Michigan requires charter boats fishing its waters to report their catch to Michigan DNR. A guide working the Detroit River also needs Michigan's sport fishing guide license; Lake Erie itself is not covered by that license. Michigan publishes no charter list we check, so Michigan cards say "USCG credential: self-reported".

Ontario

We don't list Ontario charters. If your trip crosses into Ontario waters, everyone fishing needs Ontario's license. Which license?

Badges repeat what a public list showed on a date. They aren't endorsements. How badges work
